What is Shani Sade Sati?

Shani Sade Sati is one of the most talked-about periods in Vedic astrology. It refers to the roughly 7½ years during which Saturn (Shani), the slowest-moving of the classical planets, transits through three signs — the 12th, 1st and 2nd from your birth Moon sign (Janma Rashi). Because Saturn takes about 2½ years to cross each sign, the full journey lasts around seven and a half years, and every person experiences it two or three times in a normal lifespan.

The three phases

Sade Sati unfolds in three stages of about 2½ years each:

  • Rising (Aarohini): Saturn is in the 12th from your Moon. Losses, expenses, travel and a sense of unseen pressure build up.
  • Peak (Madhya / Shikhar): Saturn sits on your Moon sign — the most intense phase, touching your mind, health, family and career.
  • Setting (Avarohini): Saturn moves to the 2nd from your Moon. The weight slowly lifts and stability returns.

Sade Sati vs Dhaiya (small Panoti)

Apart from Sade Sati, Saturn also gives two shorter Dhaiya periods of about 2½ years — Kantaka Shani (Saturn in the 4th from the Moon) and Ashtama Shani (Saturn in the 8th from the Moon). These are sometimes called the "small Panoti". This calculator shows both your Sade Sati and your Dhaiya periods across your lifetime.

How to use this calculator

Enter your date, time and place of birth. We calculate your Moon sign and then follow Saturn's transit to list every Sade Sati and Dhaiya period of your life, highlight the one you are in now, and show how far through it you are. The dates are computed from Saturn's sidereal position and are accurate to within a few days.

Is Sade Sati really unlucky?

Saturn is the great teacher of the zodiac — strict, but scrupulously fair. Sade Sati asks you to work hard, take responsibility and let go of what no longer serves you. Handled with patience, discipline and sincere remedies, it often becomes a period of profound growth, career progress and lasting achievement rather than mere hardship. Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shani Sade Sati?+

Sade Sati is a 7½-year period during which the planet Saturn (Shani) transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon (Janma Rashi). It is divided into three phases of about 2½ years each — Rising, Peak and Setting — and is traditionally regarded as a testing, karma-clearing phase of life.

How is Sade Sati calculated?+

It is based on your Moon sign, not your Sun sign. This calculator finds your Janma Rashi from your date, time and place of birth, then tracks Saturn's sidereal (Lahiri) transit to work out when it enters the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon — giving your exact start, peak and end dates.

What is the difference between Sade Sati and Dhaiya?+

Sade Sati is Saturn's 7½-year transit over the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon. Dhaiya (also called small Panoti or Kantaka/Ashtama Shani) is a shorter 2½-year transit of Saturn over the 4th and 8th signs from your Moon. Both are Saturn periods, but Sade Sati is longer and generally considered more significant.

Is Sade Sati always bad?+

No. Saturn is a strict but fair teacher. Sade Sati brings hard work, responsibility and lessons, but for many it also brings maturity, discipline, career growth and lasting rewards — especially for those who work honestly and perform remedies. Its effect depends on Saturn's placement and strength in your full birth chart.

What are the best remedies for Sade Sati?+

Common remedies include reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, chanting the Shani mantra, lighting a mustard-oil lamp under a Peepal tree on Saturdays, donating black sesame or iron, and serving the elderly and needy. For remedies matched to your exact chart and Dasha, consult Guruji on the Aradhana app.
