Understanding Today's Panchang

The Panchang is the heart of the Hindu calendar. For thousands of years, families have consulted the panchangam before beginning any important activity — a wedding, a housewarming (griha pravesh), a new business, or a simple daily puja. This free tool gives you an accurate, city-specific Panchang for any date, computed from the positions of the Sun and Moon.

The Five Limbs (Anga) of the Panchang

  • Tithi — the lunar day, based on the Moon's separation from the Sun. It governs which activities are favourable.
  • Vaara — the weekday, each ruled by a planet (e.g. Monday by the Moon, Tuesday by Mars).
  • Nakshatra — the lunar mansion, one of 27 divisions of the sky through which the Moon travels.
  • Yoga — derived from the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon; there are 27 yogas.
  • Karana — half of a Tithi; there are 11 karanas that repeat through the lunar month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Panchang?+

Panchang (or Panchangam) is the traditional Hindu almanac. The word means 'five limbs' — Tithi (lunar day), Vaara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga and Karana. Together they describe the quality of a day and are used to choose auspicious timings (muhurat).

How is today's Tithi calculated?+

Tithi is based on the angular distance between the Moon and the Sun. Each 12° of separation is one Tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha).

Why does the Panchang need my city?+

Sunrise and sunset — and therefore the reference moment used for many Panchang readings and muhurat — depend on your latitude and longitude. Selecting your city (or detecting your location) gives you accurate local timings.

Which ayanamsa does this Panchang use?+

This tool uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard sidereal system adopted by the Indian government and most Vedic astrologers, to compute Nakshatra, Yoga and the Rashi positions.

Is this Panchang free?+

Yes. This Panchang is completely free. For daily Panchang notifications, aartis, horoscope and personalised guidance from Guruji, download the free Aradhana app.
